Biography
Johann Nepomuk Hummel was born to Josef Hummel, Director of the Imperial School of Military Music and Conductor of the Theater Orchestra. After failing at the violin, he chose the pianoforte and became quite good. As a child, he lived with Mozart for 2 years as Mozart gave him piano lessons.Mozart predicted a great future for him. Just as Hadyn who went before him, Hummel became the Kappelmeister to Prince Esterhazy at Eisenstadt. He married Elisabeth Röckel, an opera singer, in 1813. Hummel was involved with nearly all of the big name composers of the day includingBeethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, and Liszt. He had a great influence on the modern piano school as was evident from the early works of Chopin and Schumann. He died from poor health, andMozart's requiem was performed at his funeral. Hummal was considered the last important representative of the Viennese school of the piano started by Mozart.
