Biography

Lalo (Boris) Schifrin was the son of Luís Schifrin, concertmaster and a founding member of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic. In college, Lalo studied music and law and went to Paris on scholarship. In 1955, he performed as a representative of Argentina at the International Jazz Festival at Salle Pleyel. Back in Argentia, he met jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie in 1956 where Schifrin was performing with his 16-piece band. He began composing music and in 1958 traveled to America to work with Dizzy Gillespie as the band's pianist and musical arranger. He continued to work as a jazz musician with the big names of jazz including Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Jimmy Smith, Cannonball Adderley, Ray Brown, and Count Basie. After his first album for Roulette he became busy writing TV and film music and performing at jazz festivals. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood "Walk of Fame" in 1988 and wrote the finale music for the Three Tenors concerts (José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavorotti) in 1990, 1994, and 1998. With four Grammys (16 nominations) and six Oscar nominations to his credit, he has been one of the most active composers of his time.
