[Abbreviation, ordinario]

The abbreviation for the Italian term, ordinario. It is a directive to return to the usual way of performing after a passage that was indicated with a special performance technique. For example, if the violins have been directed to perform a passage of music col legno (or strike the strings with the wood of the bow), the directive ord. would indicate that the performer should return to the ordinary method of performing, or return to bowing using the hair  of the bow. This directive is almost always seen as the abbreviation, ord.
