edition
[English]
The specific version of a composition. Often, a composition is edited by a publisher as the handwritten notation is being prepared for printing. The purpose is to make the notation as clear as possible to the performer through consistent markings (expression marks, articulation, etc.) and a consistent visual look of the composition.
Some editions are created to correct errors in prior editions or to provide additional markings to inform the performer of a performance practice that was implied at the time of the composition.
Additionally, historical editions are versions of a composition that are typically a result of scholarly research and strive to provide a version that most accurately aligns with the original intentions of the composer.
