gravis

[Latin]

The earliest form of musical notation from the two signs of Greek prosody (written text to be performed) indicating stress, pitch, and length of syllables in the text. The gravis indicates a lowering inflection of the voice.

See more about the evolution of noteshapes in the Appendix.
