pegbox

[English]

The location on stringed instruments into which the tuning pegs are inserted. This is where the performer adjusts the tension of the strings to control its pitch. Typically, the tuning pegs are inserted into the sides of the pegbox as with the violin family. Some string instruments, such as ukeleles and some banjos, where the tuning pegs are inserted into the pegbox on a right angle to the fingerboard use the term pegdisc or pegboard. The system that uses worm gears instead of a tuning peg is called a machine head.
