pit orchestra

[English]

An orchestra that provides the accompaniment for a theatrical or dance performance . Most often used with opera, ballet and musical theater, the pit orchestra can range from a small ensemble of several keyboards and drums, to close to 100 musicians with Wagnerian opera. The size of the orchestra is most often limited by the size of the orchestra pit or the area of the theater where the orchestra performs. A typical orchestra pit has space for around 20 to 30 musicians. Musical theater of the 20th century require musicians to double, or play mulitiple instruments so the composer can have access to more timbres in the composition without adding more musicians in the orchestra pit.
