tango

[Spanish]

A latin dance which originated in Argentina in the early 20th century. It is in a moderately slow 2/4 meter and contains the same basic rhythm of the habanera at a faster speed with syncopated figures. The dance quickly became a part of the dances required for professional ballroom dance competition and was used by many classical composers such as Paul Hindemith, Conrad Beck, Ernst Krenek and Igor Stravinsky. In 1918, Stravinsky's work L'Histoire du Soldat contained a tango.
