bandmaster

[English]

A generic term used to designate the leader of a band. Although this term can be applied to any person that leads a band, it is most often associated with the leader of a military band, concert band symphonic band, or marching band. The bandmaster is generally the director or conductor of the band and can also responsible for the administrative aspects of the organization. In military bands, the bandmaster is usually a Warrant Officer or, in special cases, a Commissioned Officer.

The American Bandmasters Association was founded in 1929 by a number of bandmasters from the US and Canada and continues to recognize outstanding achievement on the part of concert band conductors and composers.
