Altgeige

Alt-GIE-ghe

[German, viola]

The German term for a type of viola. The term Altgeige literally means alto violin and was created by Hermann Ritter in the late nineteenth century. This instrument was larger than the current viola. In 1898, a fifth string was added and, to make the instrument more playable, was shortened.
