double reed
DUH-bul reed
[English]
A vibrating device in some woodwind instruments that consists of two pieces of cane bound together at the base, and placed so as the thin, upper part of the reeds are almost touching. The player's breath is blown between these two reeds, causing vibration and thus sounding the instrument. Double reeds are used in oboes, bassoons, crumhorns, English horns, etc.
