down-bow

The technique used on a bowed stringed instrument where the musician performs the indicated note by moving the bow down or from the frog towards the tip (away from the body). This is opposed to an up-bow where the musician moves the bow up or from the tip to the frog or moving the bow toward the body. This technique is indicated by a symbol resembling a small bracket over the note. See also bowing
