concert

KON-surt

[English]

  1. Term for a public musical performance. A performance of a smaller scale is usually referred to as a recital. The term concert is the same in English and French.

  2. Term referring to the specific pitch or key when working with transposing instruments. For example, if an ensemble were asked to play a concert pitch of B flat, that means all transposing instruments would need to play the note on their instrument that sounds B flat. So a clarinet or trumpet would have to play their C to sound a concert B flat. Similarly, with a concert key, a composition written in the key of B flat would be written in the key of C for clarinet or trumpet.

[Eng.] concert[Fr.] concert (m); [Ger.] Konzert (n); [It.] concerto (m).
