steel guitar

[English]

  1. A type of guitar developed in Hawaii in the late 19th century. The guitar was placed on its back and played by plucking the strings with one hand while the other hand moved a bar (normally metal or glass) along the strings on the neck to change pitch. By the 1930s, the shape of the instrument was refined and electric pickups were added to provide a richer range of sounds.

  2. A style of playing a guitar with a steel bar or slide.
