sonata-allegro form

soe-NAH-tah ah-LAY-groe form

[English]

The form generally used for the opening movement of the Classical sonata. It is also known as first-movement form. It consists of an exposition, followed by a development and a recapitulation.

The thematic material is presented for the first time in the exposition, generally in two theme groups. The thematic material presented in the exposition is then rearranged, transposed, and transformed in the development section. Finally, the thematic material is presented once again in its original form in the recapitulation. There is usually a short closing theme or coda ending the movement.
