string band

[English]

The name for certain bands performing folk music that originated in the American rural south, dating back to the 1800's. The term string band refers to the large number of the amateur musicians that lived in the rural south who played string instruments, so there were primarily string instruments in the ensembles when the musicians gathered to perform at a local event. The string bands would normally have a fiddle playing the melody accompanied by one or more additional string instrument such as guitar, mandolin, banjo, and possibly string bass or washtub bass. In some areas, the jug was used as the bass instrument. Other instruments that may be found in the string band include the hammer dulcimer or autoharp. String bands typically perform old-time music.
